VCAE website review (late)

In your own words, what does Visual Culture mean to you, how would you define it? Visual art, social media, film, television, fashion. A lot of things could be considered visual culture. A tangible and physical representation of a culture, group, period of time. In the "Zinester: Art of Individualism" video: Have you heard of "Zines" before? I've heard them mentioned in movies and maybe in passing at art events, but I don't think I've ever seen one in person before. What do you think about the Zine Library? Its a neat idea, a good way to bring together different people, artists or not, to create a shared space and media that expresses a feeling or idea. I'm curious to know how long they keep them on the shelf or consider making digital copies just for the sake of record keeping. What do you think of the concept of consumers/producers? I think everyone is a consumer, consuming media, products, social media etc. I feel like the only way to avoid being ...

The Art of Failure

Is there anything discussed in this article that you can relate to? I really loved Janai Brugger's interview, she spoke about her care er as an opera singer, the challenges she faced and finding strength in weakness. Brugger said "Failure is when I’m not 100 percent focused or giving it my all, and if I don’t learn something from the experience. There’s always something to learn. If I don’t allow myself that, then I feel that I failed.", there were relatable comments by some of the other interveiwees/artists but I appreciated Bruggers comment that failure only happens when you dont try and give it your all. Theres always a learning experience tucked away in each "failure", and I think when it comes to creative pursuits the idea that "we are our own worst critic" really fits with this "fear of failure". Who decides that something failed, really? Is it a personal decision to deem an artwork or performance a failure? I think we are likely to jud...

Marc Prensky

PART 1 1. What do you think of the term: Digital Natives vs. Digital Immigrants? I've never heard of these specific terms before watching these videos, but the ideas make sense. 2. Where do you fit in? I feel like I land somewhere in the middle, certain types of technology come easy to me or are things I use frequently, while others take longer for me to get the hang of or just arent something that help me enough in my day-to-day to bother taking on. 3. In regards to the Digital Divide, how do you see it impacting education? I like his mention of "open phone testing". In the real world when were faced with a problem, how likely is it that we have no access to the internet to look for assistance? or a friend who might know the answer. Seems like something that in the right circumstances and classrooms would be helpful to give students the best possible chance of being successful and feeling confident in the knowledge they already have. 4. What are the most interesting conc...

Prezi Experience Review

Of the media artists your peers created presentations on, which one made the most impact on you and why? The artist that Veronica presented on, Witchoria, really stood out to me. I'm a little biased because I always love to read about someone local, but her photosgraphs are really beautiful and explosively emotion but also very subtle. Using a camera of Photoshop was never something that really interested me, and I usually prefer to look at other mediums over photography but Victorias work is really different. I thought it was interesting that she shared so much about her entire process in the video, beginning to end giving a quick version of how she creates her work. She makes it seem  so simple and I know it is absolutely  not as effortless as she makes it look. How did you like the peer review process? Do you find it helpful to give and receive feedback on lesson ideas and constructive criticism? Its defintely helpful to see how peers make their way through the same ...

Sougwen Chung

What is the topic (what artist) of your presentation and why did you select that artist? Sougwen Chung was the artist I looked into. I havent heard of her before this project but am glad I stumbled upon her work, I feel like she really fits the idea of a "new media artist" since she so heavily involves technology in her artwork. Did you encounter any challenges when creating this presentation? Please describe them and how you overcame them. What did you enjoy the most about this project and why? The least? and why?  I initially started out making my own presentation and then switched to one of the templates and am glad I did. Figuring out how to add videos was tricky at first but I ended up pulling a majority of mine from YouTube which Prezi makes easy. I would like to spend more time looking into what else Prezi can do as I feel like I really stuck to the basics.  Do you think you will use    Prezi  in your art classroom? Why or why not?  Defintel...

Week 3 - Kevin Tavin

1. What are the   three   (3) most interesting facts you learned from the lecture? and why are they interesting to you? Kevin Tavin mentioned the "gaming gaze", which I've never heard of or thought of before, the idea of looking ahead of where you are and imagining the next steps while moving through the current steps. I feel like this idea applies to art making as well, thinking forward and imagining where something will go before it does. I've heard the story about the Guernica painting at the U.N/ meeting before and am always curious to know what PR person or event organizer looked past that when deciding on the space for Colin Powells press conference. Does the world of politics just see it as art and not think about the piece enough to consider that maybe it has some meaning they might want to be mindful of before broadcasting it as a backdrop during pro-war meeting? Tavin spoke a lot about different types of technology, asking the question "How do these dev...

W2 Visual Culture

In your own words, what does Visual Culture mean to you, how would you define it? June K McFee video (  from 1995, wow! )): What are the most important things discussed that are still relevant today in regards to Art Education and Visual Culture? In the "Zinester: Art of Individualism" video Have you heard of "Zines" before?  What do you think about the Zine Library? What do you think of the concept of consumers/producers? Would you find the creation of a Zine an appropriate topic/project to explore in your classroom? In the "Beginning a Lesson" Video: What information from this video is of interest to you for your classroom? Do you find the "Arguments 1-4" valid concepts to explore Visual Culture in the classroom? How might you use these in your classroom?

W2 Banksy

Have you heard of Banksy before reading these materials for class? If so, what do you think of his work. If not, would you like to know more about him? I'm familiar with Banksy and have always had interest and respect for most street artists. When the line between graffiti and street art is brought up, Banksy is always a popular name to throw into the conversation since they draw attention world wide but I think until I started to learn more about them I didnt fully understand why they do what they do (of course I still dont completely now, but I think having some background knowledge on this particular artists makes his work much more interesting). Banksy is an artist that is able to create work on a wall, knowing how temporary it could end up being and that they likely wont profit from it financially, but they continue to thrive in the art world. Surely Banksy sees some financial gains from the pieces they create but I've never seen any solid proof of what their income and ne...

W1 - Social Media and Culture

What is something new that you learned? What did you find interesting? All three videos reminded me of a movie on Netflix called "Social Dilemma" that I just watched last year. Flashing back to the phone I had when I graduated from high school in 2005, a TracPhone I had to purchase minutes for that had no way to connect to the internet, and the phone my 14 year old sister has now is truly alarming. Advances in technology are astounding and interesting, but the impact that our screen time  has on our day to day lives seems likely to continue. When I got lost driving around in the city of Buffalo at midnight when I was 17, my options were to stop at a gas station and ask for directions or call my mom and admit I was out when I wasnt supposed to be. There wasnt a Maps app to save me and send me back home at the click of a button. Thats such a basic and boring connection to make, but being able to go anywhere I want without having to look at a map isnt something I would ever wan...
